Deep in a picturesque Devon valley lives the best loved wild animal in Britain. Yet while the badger is easily recognised, remarkably few people have ever seen one alive. For a creature never far from controversy and blamed for all manner of destruction and disease, surprisingly little is known about the badger's private family life.

Using the latest research and hidden cameras this film exposes the secrets of life in the sett. These are badgers as never seen before.

Narrator David Attenborough whispers that we are being given a "privileged glimpse into a secret world" by this enchanting film, and he is, of course, absolutely right. Underground cameras capture the lives of a family of badgers who inhabit a network of tunnels beneath a lush Devon valley. It's real paparazzi stuff, too, showing us everything bar them falling drunk out of nightclubs - we see the badgers eating, sleeping, grooming, cleaning (they are very tidy and even make their beds), wrestling and, in one hilarious sequence, scratching (and boy, do they love to scratch, vigorously). It's lovely stuff, which means it's tough to be brought up short by some stark facts - such as that nearly a quarter of all Britain's badgers are killed on the country's roads in spring, when the clocks go forward and the nearly blind creatures shuffle across busy roads.
